The Field Memorial Library in Shaw suffered flood damage that hindered services Monday.

Bolivar County Library System Director Lynn Shurden said a leaking toilet was to blame for water that accumulated across the library floor over the weekend.

"It took several hours to clean up the water, but we had some workers vacuum it out and finish the cleanup yesterday," said Shurden.

The library is back to running normally except for bathroom services.

Shurden said the leaking has stopped but the toilet will require more repairs.

"Fortunately we didn't have too much damage to the books or shelves," added Shurden. "We did have to get rid of a nice rug that was used in the children's section."

The damage comes at a bad time for the library as it has been battling financial issues, but the library committee has been working diligently throughout the year on fundraising projects.

According to committee member Eleanor Scott, a past debt of $9,333 has been paid, while fundraising will continue to go toward 2012 annual expenses.

Previous fundraising events have included a bake sale, community basketball game and family fun day.

"We're still hoping to raise money through another basketball game between city officials against local citizens," said Scott. "We wanted to do this in August but that didn't happened as planned."

The building where the library is housed, on 132 North Peeler St., has an unfortunate history when it comes to infrastructure and maintenance issues.

Two fires have occurred at the site, including one in 2000 that required residents to fundraise for five years before it reopened in 2005.

In September, a brick was thrown through the window of the front door and gaming equipment was stolen.

Shurden said the library has spent about $1,000 on lost materials, cleaning and vacuuming the water from the toilet and replacing the glass following the break-in.

"The citizens of Shaw have done a good job raising money to help keep their library open, but I know there are a lot of other needs in Shaw too," said Shurden. "Sometimes the library is the last thing that comes to people's minds."
