Rueben Watson Sr., 77, of Shaw died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at South Sunflower County Hospital in Indianola.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at McEvans School in Shaw. Burial will follow in Spangle Banner Cemetery in Shaw with Rev. Larry King officiating.

Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013, at Byas Funeral Home in Cleveland and one hour before the service on Saturday. Family hour will be from 6-7 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013, at Byas Funeral Home Chapel.

Rueben was born in Vicksburg on March 23, 1935, to the late James and Thelma Watson. He was the seventh of 10 children. He graduated from Bowman High and continued on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi Vocational, now MVSU.

Rueben was married to Rachel Pearl Bell, who preceded him in his death; they were married for 51 years.

Reuben worked in Benoit and Shaw Schools for more than 30 years, where he was a Physical Education and math teacher. He later received his masters and Educational Specialist from Delta State.

He became the first black superintendent for Shaw schools in 1983 until he retired in 1993.
