Hawks win region title
The Shaw High School Hawks delivered the goods Friday night in Coffeeville.
The Hawks defeated the Coffeeville Pirates 67-45 in the Region 3-1A Title game. Shaw improved to 23-5. Shaw got off to a slow start as the team fell behind 15-14 after the first quarter. From the second quarter on, the Hawks outscored the Pirates 53-30.
Before they played their first region tournament game on Thursday, the Hawks had a two-week layoff between games. The region championship was the fifth for the Hawks in six years.
Shaw High head coach Anthony Davis said the team has done a good job of overcoming the long layoffs.
“Once the guys got into a good rhythm of the game, everything was under control,” Davis said. “They played great defense and got a lot of steals. They made the transition baskets. Once we play like that, it’s hard for anybody to beat us.”
Andre Pruitt scored 23 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals, followed by Octavious Stimage with 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks and Jermarquis Stimage and Malik Walker with 12 points each. Jermarquis Stimage also pulled down six rebounds with four steals and two assists, while Walker with five rebounds and three steals.
Shaw will return to the basketball court on Tuesday to play Ashland (No. 4 seed, Region 2) in the first round of the 1A North Half Playoffs in Shaw at 7 p.m.
Coffeeville Girls 61, Ray Brooks 59
The Ray Brooks Lady Tigers came up short in their quest for a region title, as they lost to the Coffeeville Lady Pirates in the championship game of the Region 3-1A Tournament Friday night in Coffeeville.
Ray Brooks fell to 14-11.
Ray Brooks will host Ashland (No. 3 seed, Region 2)on Monday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the 1A North Half Playoffs at Benoit.
Shaw Girls 57, Montgomery Co. 41
The Shaw High School Lady Hawks earned a victory in the consolation game of the Region 3-1A Tournament in Coffeeville but defeating Montgomery County Friday night.
Shaw improved to 6-15.
Shaw, a No. 3 seed, will travel to Coldwater (No. 2 seed, Region 2) to play Coldwater High School at 7 p.m. on Monday in the first round of the 1A North Half Playoffs.
Region 3-4A Tournament
Yazoo Co. Girls 62, Cleveland 47
The Cleveland High School Lady Wildcats came up short against the Yazoo County Panthers in the consolation game of the Region 3-4A Tournament Friday night in Greenwood.
Cleveland fell to 16-14.
Chelsea Heffner scored 12 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Lady Wildcats.
Cleveland, a No. 4 seed, will be back in action on Monday when the team hits the road to Ecru to play North Pontotoc (No. 1 seed, Region 2) in the first round of the 4A North Half Tournament.
Region 3-2A Tournament
The West Bolivar Lady Eagles finished fourth in the Region 3-2A Tournament by losing to Coahoma County in the consolation game Friday in Shelby.
West Bolivar (12-15, No. 4 seed), will play Potts Camp on the road Monday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the 2A North Half Playoffs.
