The Bolivar County Extension service is gearing up for the 23rd Annual Rice Tasting Luncheon, set to take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Walter Sillers Coliseum at Delta State University.
The event is to have over 300 rice dishes, which will include appetizers and deserts.
Restaurants will dazzle the crowd with their exotic and home-style dishes.
Along with various dishes from restaurants, local rice farmers and families will bring their favorite rice dishes and share recipe ideas.
"I would like for everyone to come out and celebrate rice, support our local rice farmers and eat some good rice," said Laura Giaccaglia, Bolivar County Extension Service coordinator.
Delta Rice Promotions hosts the event each year and its mission is exclusively for the promotion of Mississippi produced rice.
In addition, Delta Rice Promotions promotes the cookbook "Between the Levees," grocery store promotions, educational programs, speaking to various groups about Mississippi RICE and the Mississippi Rice Cook-Off.
In 1995 Delta Rice Promotions won the first ever USA Rice Federation Award for the best September Rice Month Promotion.
In 1996, the USA Rice Federation for rice promotions in the state presented Delta Rice Promotions with the Award of Excellence.
Recent research published in the Journal of American Dietetic Association and Nutrition Today shows that eating enriched rice helps improve overall diet quality and potentially reduces the risk for many chronic diseases.
According to the USA Rice Federation, Mississippi ranks fourth in rice production among major U.S. rice-producing states.
Rice production is concentrated in the northeast area of the state
"Every year our mission is to promote rice production", said Giaccaglia,
Delta State University nursing students and North Sunflower Medical Center will have a booth setup to check blood pressure.
Tickets are $5 and they are on sale now at the Bolivar County Extension Service.
They can also be purchased at the door the day of the event.
