The road closing began earlier this week and will run through this afternoon or Friday morning.
"While we apologize for any inconvenience that the closing of Miss. Highway 448 may cause, it is necessary so that we can perform general maintenance and bridge repairs," said a spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Transportation by phone this morning.
"All lanes in both directions will be closed," he said. "Miss. Highway 450 between U.S. Highway 61 and Miss. Highway 1 can be used as an alternate route."
MDOT officials said that Miss. Highway 448 is what is called a low weight road and that is the main reason for the closing.
"The main objective of this project is adding braces under the bridges on this stretch of highway," he said. "During the harvest season, grain trucks run through this route pretty regularly and the brace will just added extra support so that nothing will happen in the future."
MDOT is regulated and must make routine inspections of bridges and roadways periodically across the state.
MDOT officials warn that extreme caution is necessary in and around all work zones.
Anytime a driver approaches work zones they are advised to reduce speeds as they travel through these areas. Message signs, barrels and cones will be used to warn drivers of any lane closures.
