Luvenia Manley Shaw was born on December 19, 1919, in Pace to the union of Tom and Clarinda Manley.

She died on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, in Fairfield, Calif. Luvenia attended public schools in Cleveland.

In the early 1940s, she moved to Rosedale, where she married and started her family.

After becoming a widow, Luvenia raised her children on her own. 

She was very active in the Civil Rights Movement in the ’60s. She had many meetings in her home and members from up North staying in her home at times. She was a hard worker in many causes she believed in. She was instrumental in starting the Head Start Program in Rosedale. She taught herself to become a midwife, and delivered many, many babies in Bolivar and surrounding counties. 

In 1968, Luvenia moved her family from Mississippi to Fairfield, Calif. She joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church where she remained a member until her death. While at MCBC, Luvenia taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Mission Circle.

After all of her children left home, Luvenia enjoyed traveling. She loved going on long trips for months at a time. She enjoyed such places as Michigan, Illinois, Germany, Paris, Italy, and London. She also enjoyed playing Bingo with her friends at Parkway Plaza.

Luvenia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all seven of her siblings, aunts, and uncles.

She was also preceded in death by seven of her children, R.B, Willie, Pearlie, Levester, Barbara, Willie Lee and Jimmie.

She leaves to cherish her memory her remaining children, John (Rose), Evelyn (R.T), Ollie, Katie, Edna and Gwen (Emmanuel), and one godson, Fulton. She is also survived by 44 grandchildren, 97 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, 1 great-great-great grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.

She is also survived by her three special friends, Octavia, Minnie, and Joyce.  She will be greatly missed by all of us.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 8, 2013, from 6-9 p.m. at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 West Texas St Fairfield, Calif.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 1735 Enterprise Dr, Bldg 3, Fairfield, CA.
