The Delta Ladies Tennis team comprised of Cleveland residents Missy Lamb (captain), Sonia Britt, Melanie Earls, Cindy Carpenter, Karen Causey, Jennifer Brunetti, Christie Washington and Ashley Pollen won the 5.0 division of the Mississippi Combo Doubles Tennis Championship last week in Jackson. The tournament began on Nov. 8 and concluded on Nov. 11.
The road to the title hasn’t been an easy one for the young women as they’ve worked hard to improved their skills as they are new to playing the sport.
Before going to the state tournament, the team of eight won their Delta Doubles Combo League with a 7-1 record.
Lamb said she has been happy with the way each player on the team has developed her game on the court.
“We all have just recently started (playing tennis),” Lamb said. “When we started playing, none of us had picked up a tennis racket and that was last year. One day a week, we went to Greenville and drilled with Zane Jacobs our coach. We joined the league, because we were encouraged to compete.
“We put in lots of practice and put in lots of time and here we are. We kept practicing. Once we won the local league, we continued to practice. Once we went to state, we won every match. We were 5-0. Now, we will compete in the sectionals in March at Mobile, Alabama,” Lamb added.
Lamb said winning a state championship is something she didn’t anticipate when the team started competing.
“We never would have thought we would have made it this far,” Lamb said. “We have progressed a lot over the year.”
