The 4A Cleveland High School Lady Wildcats have been playing a killer schedule to open the fast pitch softball season.

In their first six games of the year, Cleveland played four 6A schools and two 5A schools. Cleveland had struggled to find a way to win as the team started out 0-6. Tuesday night at the Cleveland High School softball, the Lady Wildcats played another bigger school as the 6A Grenada High School Lady Chargers came to town. Cleveland lost to Grenada 5-4 at Grenada earlier in the year, but had different luck on Tuesday by winning 7-6. The win pushed Cleveland’s record to 1-6.

Grenada grabbed the lead in the top of the third by scoring six runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead. Cleveland didn’t stay down as the Lady Wildcats scored two runs in the fifth and two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win.

“We’ve been playing some really tough competition and been very competitive with all the teams we’ve played,” Cleveland High head coach Bill Hatcher said. “I’m proud of the fact that we finally learned how to win a close one.”

Sophomore hurler Brianna Garner went the distance as she gave up nine hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in the seven-inning complete game effort.

Ferris Love Capocaccia led Cleveland at the plate with three hits including a triple with three runs and two RBIs, followed by Morgan Ray with two hits and a run, Megan Skelton with two hits, McKarlee Ingram with a hit, Lauren Ashley Collins with two RBIs, Cassie Skelton with two runs and Molly Upchurch with a run.

Cleveland will return to the softball diamond on Friday when the team hosts Greenwood.
