In its ninth year, nationally syndicated radio host Tom Joyner brings over 12,000 families to his annual Family Reunion to enjoy five days of entertainment, seminars and celebrities during Labor Day weekend.
Cannon, a Benoit School District business manager, took her three daughters, Jaliqa, Chasitie and Lavoryette, and her mother, Patricia, on the trip. Winners stayed at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando.
“The people there were friendly," Cannon said of her stay there. "We got the five-star treatment."
Included in the trip were concert tickets, a day at Universal Studios and Universal's Islands of Adventure, and spending money.
"The concerts were awesome," Cannon commented. "Everything was well-arranged and organized." Among the performers the family enjoyed over the weekend were Keith Sweat, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Jennifer Hudson, Sinbad, Huggy Low Down and Bobby V. On Sunday the family attended the Gospel Explosion featuring Kirk Franklin, Dr. Bobby Jones, Tamela and David Mann from "Meet the Browns," Vashawn Mitchell and Beyond Blessed.
"It was a spiritual, uplifting event," Cannon commented.
Another exciting event for Cannon and her family was attending the live broadcast of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, where she participated in a game and won a prize.
Cannon added that Joyner interacted with the crowd. "Some celebrities you hear about being rude," she said. "But Tom Joyner talked to us like we were family."
Other events included an Expo with educational booths, a trip to a local mall, a pool party and a barbecue at Universal Studios. "It was awesome," Cannon said of the barbecue. "We took part in a musical dance-off. And Rebecca and Terry Crews from 'Meet the Crews' partied with us.
Family Game Night provided time for Cannon's family and the other participants to enjoy being with each other. "There were board games," Cannon said. "It was to get families to interact with each other. We met people from Michigan, Florida, Alabama and all over. We had a blast."
Perhaps the best part of the weekend was that Cannon and her family were able to spend time together. "We enjoyed each other. We participated in events together. The most fun was being around people having fun. And we enjoyed meeting new people. The Tom Joyner Family Reunion is a must-visit family vacation for all. I want to thank everyone that provided this opportunity for us to go. We hope to go again next year!"
McDonald’s Owner-Operator Mike Retzer, commenting on the contest, said, “We are pleased to have our Tom Joyner Family Reunion winner use this time to strengthen their family relationships, and we’re equally pleased that they had an entertaining time at the Reunion.”
