Evelyn Pearson Weems was born on January 9, 1922, and died at home on August 12, 2013.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Madison United Methodist Church, where she was a member, followed by a service at 11 a.m. Interment will be at 4 p.m. in Beulah Cemetery, Beulah, on the same day.

Mrs. Weems grew up in Rosedale, attended Mississippi State College for Women, and graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Va. She married Dr. William Edmonds Weems on August 19, 1944. They lived in Rochester, N.Y.; Denver, Colo.; and New Orleans, La.; before moving to Laurel, where they made their home for 56 years. For the past nine years, Mrs. Weems has been a resident of St. Catherine’s Village in Madison.

In Laurel, Mrs. Weems was very active in the community, serving the First United Methodist Church on the Alter Guild, in the United Methodist Women, as Superintendent of the Primary Class, and as Decorations Chairman for the Thirty-Niners. She was president and parliamentarian of the Laurel Garden Club, a member of the Little Garden Club, and an award winning flower-arranger. She held leadership positions in the National Society of Colonial Dames of America and the Daughters of the American Revolution, fulfilling two terms as Regent of the Nahoula Chapter of the DAR and serving on the Permanent Advisory Board of the Rosalie Governing Board. Mrs. Weems was also a supporter and benefactor of the Lauren Rogers Museum.

Mrs. Weems is survived by her brother, John Lafayette Pearson III (Katherine) of Rosedale; her children William E. Weems Jr. (Dere) of Vero Beach, Florida, Lyn Weems Gates (Alex) of Sumner, Walter S. Weems (Susan) of Jackson and Heron P. Weems (Cary) of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren Elizabeth Weems Carpenter (Pete), Derek Weems (Maresa), George Gates (Amy), Walter Weems Jr., David Weems (Kyla), Caitlin Weems, Bo Weems and Pearson Weems; and great-grandchildren Reid Carpenter, Drew Carpenter, Charlie Carpenter, Abby Weems, and Alexander Weems.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William E. Weems, M.D., her parents Evelyn Sillers Pearson and John Lafayette Pearson, Jr., and her grandson William Gates.
