The Delta team consisting of John Cox, Chris Hardman, William Tindall, Christian Serrano, Curtis Utroska, Jeffrey Hamilton Hardin, Tyler Morgan, Lewis Butler and Jeffrey Farris won the Mississippi Southern Combo Double Championships in the 18 and over 8.5 men’s division earlier this month. The win will put them in the Southern Combo Doubles Sectional Championships in Mobile, Ala. on Feb. 28.
An interesting note about the team is Cox, Farris and Hardman have played with each other on a team since 2003. Over the last five years, Cox, Farris and Hardman have played on three state championship teams. They won the state in 2009 and 10 and finished second in 2011 and 2012. The team finished second in the sectionals in 2011.
Cox is very thankful for the successful he and the rest of his teammates have had over the years.
“We’ve been blessed,” Cox said. “We’ve had a pretty good run. We kind of reload.”
Cox said one thing that is key for the team is the fact that everybody gets along well with each other.
“First and foremost, we’re just very good friends,” Cox said. “We’ve gotten to be even better friends through the years. A lot of tennis is respect for each other’s game and trust. We’ve kind of built that and you build it on the court playing a lot of times and being successful as a tennis team. It leads to greater trust and a lot of fun. I love hanging out with those guys and we practice and play and get to travel. It’s fun to watch us root for each other.”
