The Lady Statesmen defeated the West Alabama Lady Tigers 73-43 in the women’s tournament, while the Statesmen defeated the West Florida Argonauts 67-53 in the men’s tournament.
In the women’s game, Delta State delivered a dominating performance. The Lady Statesmen shot 59.6 percent (31-of-52) from the floor, while holding the Lady Tigers to only 30.9 percent (15-o-f49) shooting.
Senior guard Shanae Govan and freshman guard Anissa Jackson did a great job of putting the Lady Statesmen on their backs. Jackson scored a team-high 16 points and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor, while Govan dished out 10 assists with eight points, six rebounds and two steals. She also shot 4-of-5 from the floor.
Junior center Seneca Walton scored 12 points with four rebounds to aid DSU, followed by senior guard Chadisty Hickman with 10 points and junior forward Rhandi Ball and sophomore center Becca Ruckes with eight points each.
Quentinette Odom led West Alabama with nine points.
West Alabama finished its season at 5-22. DSU, now 23-4, will take on the winner of today’s game with North Alabama and Christian Brothers on Saturday in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m.
In the men’s game, Delta State and West Florida battled each tough in the first half as the Statesmen held a slim 30-26 lead at halftime. The Statesmen came on strong in the second half as they shot 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the floor. For the game, DSU hit 44.2 percent (23-of-52) of its shots, while West Florida was held to just 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the floor. DSU also had great success from 3-point land by hitting 6-of-14 shots (42.9 percent) from behind the arch, while West Florida missed all 11 of its 3-point attempts.
Freshman forward Devin Schmidt scored 22 points with six assists and four rebounds, while senior forward Willie Readus scored 20 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Statesmen. Senior guard Cornell Knight scored 10 points and dished out four assists, while senior forward Mike Washington scored 10 points with two blocks to round out DSU’s damage.
Nate Johnson scored 17 points with eight rebounds, and Ellis Young scored 13 points with five rebounds and four assists to lead the Argonauts.
West Florida ended its season at 7-20. DSU, now 24-5, will move on to play in the semifinals on Saturday.
