There's nothing like the screeching sound of tennis shoes moving across a hardwood floor.

On Monday that sound could be heard as the Delta State University hoop squads hosted Mississippi Valley State in a pair of basketball games.

The exhibition felt more like a regular season game as the two schools battled it out in men and women's action.

The Lady Statesmen and Devilettes were locked in a tough battle throughout, but in the end Delta State walked away with a 55-53 win.

On the men's side the Statesmen were able to overcome a few defensive miscues to take a 78-68 victory over the Delta Devils.

The Lady Statesmen found themselves leading the Devilettes 50-47 late in the second half, but with 1:17 remaining, Valley's Joncyee Sanders managed to get in the lane for the lay-up and the foul. She made the free throw to tie the game at 50-50.

Delta State's Chelsey Rhodes responded with a three-point play of her own on the Lady Statesmen's next possession to go up 53-50 with 1:01 left in the game.

Valley would not stop fighting and it showed when A'Shanti Weathers knock down a long three point shot for a 53-53 tie with 53-seconds left.

The atmosphere changed swiftly for the Lady Statesmen when a turnover with 36.5 seconds left gave the ball back to Valley.

Delta State made a strong defensive stand and off a missed shot, Seneca Walton pulled down the rebound and got the ball to Rhodes who pushed it up court and with 1.7 seconds left was fouled on her shot attempt.

Rhodes stepped to the line and made both free throws to put the Lady Statesmen up 55-53. That basket would be all the Lady Statesmen needed as Sanders' last second heave fell short.

Rhodes led Delta State with a game high 19 points. She was 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Walton scored 13 points with 17 rebounds; Becca Ruckes scored six, Kenisha Henry had five, Anissa Jackson and Rhandi Ball scored four each while Myiesha Stewart only scored two points, but pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Devilettes were led by Ashley Beals with 18 points and eight rebounds, Sanders had 13 points, six assist, six steals and five rebounds, Weathers scored 13 points and Jasmyne Sanders added six point sin the loss.

In the men's game the Statesmen placed five players in double figures in route to a 10-point victory.

Down the stretch the Statesmen displayed their strong defensive intensity, which has become a staple under second year head coach Jim Boone.

With 3:09 remaining in the game the Delta Devils led 68-66, but could not do any more damage as the Statesmen held them scoreless throughout the rest of the game.

During that stretch, Delta State went 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.

On the night the Statesmen scored 22 points off 16 Valley turnovers.

Jackson State transfer Willie Readus made his presence felt in the paint with a game high 18 points and nine rebounds. Jack Madgen scored 16 points, Devin Schmidt had 13 points and Cornell Knight and Alister Chisholm added 11 points each. Mike Washington scored seven points.

The Statesmen will open the season against Florida Southern College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and against Eckerd College at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Delta State returns to action Saturday, traveling to Pensacola, Fla. to take on Tuskegee University. Tip is slated for noon.
