DSU legacies to get branded by the Okra

Young Delta State legacies all over the country will soon be seeing green and white.

From Pampers and passies to texting and high school, the hope of the DSU Alumni Association is to brand Delta State legacies from their early years so when the time comes to choose a college, Delta State is on their list.

The Delta State University National Alumni Association Legacy Program has begun and information cards are pouring into the alumni house.

DSU alumni are currently receiving information cards allowing them to enroll their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews in the program which then allows that legacy to receive free Statesman/Okra-themed, age appropriate gifts, invitations to age appropriate campus activates, and personalized postcards on each birthday through age 16.

"Everything we do as an association is geared toward giving back to the university, whether it is providing scholarships to students or facilitating a way to keep alumni connected through magazines or events like homecoming," said National Alumni Association President Richard Myers.

"The Legacy Program is just another way to give back to Delta State. We have realized that the most passionate recruiters are members of the alumni association.

"We wanted to give them an avenue to connect people to Delta State, especially including their children and grandchildren. We also did not want this connection to be limited to high school students that are looking for a college to attend," said Myers.

Jeffrey Farris, alumni director, said he has had this idea for a while and was inspired by Oklahoma State and Nebraska's legacy programs.

Now, Delta State is the only public university in Mississippi with a legacy program.

After pointing out that several of the legacy forms already received were for legacies from states such as Tennessee and Virginia, he said, "these are kids we would miss because we can't attend those college fairs. It's just not in the budget. But we got them and now they can identify with Delta State."

"We need students to experience Delta State at a young age, we can develop a relationship with them when they aren’t on campus," he added.

Farris said he would like to see a legacy tent at Pig Pickin' allowing them to have a place to spend time during the tailgating and treat them to a Pig Pickin' ticket.

Farris said his goal is to begin reaching out to the legacies by Jan. 15 of next year.

"There are so many potentials there. We can help the recruiters get a head start and could eventually assist in increasing enrollment," he said.
