The Delta State University Student Alumni Association (SAA) held its first meeting of the year last Wednesday night at the Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni-Foundation House.

Over 50 students attended the meeting.

Michael Oleis, president of SAA, opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and encouraging them to sign up for officer positions or committees.

The only two returning officers this year are Oleis and Vice President Amy Scott.

The remaining officer positions will be announced at next month’s meeting.

“The attendance and participation at this opening meeting for the Student Alumni Association was impressive,” said Cheryl Oleis, SAA advisor. “Students were very responsive to the call for officer and committee chair applicants, to the request for volunteers to help with the many homecoming activities, and they showed a lot of creativity with their ideas for future SAA projects – all signs that it will be a great year ahead!”

The SAA serves as the bridge between the student body and alumni of the university and is housed under the Alumni Association.

SAA’s biggest project of the year is the Student Survival Kits that are sold at the end of each semester.

SAA also volunteers for the many Homecoming events around campus, and they are planning to partner with the Student Government Association on a service project this spring.

“I would like to publicly thank my SAA Vice President, Amy Scott, along with fellow students Alex Crosby and Jessica Foster for the job they did in pulling together this first meeting and rallying such a large number of students to attend,” said President Michael Oleis. “I look forward to working with them and all those who were there last night to increase the number of students present at the next meeting. It is important for students and a benefit to students to become involved and engaged with our alumni – and this organization provides opportunity after opportunity to do just that.”

“SAA started off great with a lot of enthusiastic students ready to get involved,” said Scott. “I encourage every student who wishes to join to please attend the next meeting.”

Members pay $20 a year in dues for the budget.
