Bolivar County residents gathered Wednesday evening to light candles and pray for the victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

Close to 100 people attended the vigil which included words from city and county officials, poems by young children, songs and prayers.

Gov. Phil Bryant has issued a proclamation calling for a statewide moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of last week's massacre at a school in Connecticut.

Bryant's proclamation calls on people around the state to observe a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Also, it calls on places of worship and government buildings that have the capability to ring bells 26 times — in honor of the 26 people killed in the shootings at the Sandy Hook school.
