Cleveland Schools hires new nutrition director

Krista Davis was welcomed and recognized at the last Cleveland School District Board of Trustees meeting as the new child nutrition director for the school district.

She officially began working within the district on Jan. 6.

Davis and her husband moved from north Idaho to the Mississippi Delta in the summer of 2008 after Todd Davis joined the faculty at Delta State University.

Her husband is now an HPER instructor, the director of Outdoor Recreation and the director of OKRA camp.

Davis also worked at Delta State as the Healthy Campus/Community Initiative coordinator.

"The Delta is home to some of nicest people and beautiful sunsets. The summers are definitely more hot and humid than north Idaho, but the weather here in the spring and fall seasons are wonderful," said Davis.

Upon receiving the director position, Davis has several areas of focus for the nutrition in the district.

She said, "An area that I would like to concentrate on is improving breakfast participation. In the month of January, 72 percent of students in attendance ate school lunch, while only 38 percent of students in attendance ate school breakfast. A good number of these students are approved for free breakfast, but are not participating."

While she said she has not been in the district long enough to make any substantial improvements, she did say, "We were recently awarded the 2014 Nutrition Integrity Grant at two schools, which will help fund combination oven steamers to replace fryers."

Davis is looking towards a healthier future for the district and seeks out grant opportunities.

"I am hoping there will be more grant opportunities to help fund additional Combination Oven Steamers and phase out the remaining fryers in the district.

Programs such as Farm to School and Fresh Fruit and Vegetable — fresh fruits and vegetables provided as a snack to increase daily fruit and vegetable consumption — programs also may have the potential to be incorporated in the future," she explained.
