Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. November 1, 2012, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn.
He was born in Mobile, Ala., on November 7, 1922, to Benjamin Elmo and Mary Edwin Dennis Smith and raised in Greenville.
After graduating from Mississippi College in Clinton, Col. Smith continued his education and graduated from Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Conn. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served as chaplain until 1947.
He served as a Presbyterian minister assigned to the Missouri Synod from 1948-1961 when he began his active duty service in the U.S. Army.
Col. Smith retired from active duty with the U.S. Army in March 1979. His last post was as Center Chaplain of the U.S. Military Police School and Training Center at Fort McClellan, Ala. Following his military retirement, he served as an Associate Pastor of Falls Church Presbyterian Church in Falls Church, Va.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Elmo and Mary Edwin Dennis Smith; wife, Marguerite Moore Smith in 2009; and sister, Ernestine Herring in 2010.
He is survived by daughters, Rebecca Smith Rosenberg (Michael) of Lafayette Ga., and Kathleen Smith Hurst, of Chesapeake Bay, Md.; son, Lawrence Edwin Smith (Terri), of Elkton, Md.; sister, Gloria Griffin, of Cleveland; grandchildren, Heather Dendy, of Trion, Ga., Kimberly Maloit, of Chesapeake Bay, Md, and Andrew, Emily and Antonio Smith, all of Elkton, Md.; and great-grandchildren, Maddison, Ethan, and Benjamin Dendy, of Trion, Ga, and Quinn and Drake Maloit, of Chesapeake Bay, Md.
