The Cleveland High School Lady Wildcats, who played their first ever volleyball game on Aug. 16 in a tournament, are reaping the benefits of their hard work.

Thursday night at the Margaret Wade Gymnasium, the Lady Wildcats won the Class 1, Region 3 Championship by defeating the Yazoo City Lady Indians in three straight sets 25-20, 25-17 and 25-11.

The win pushed Cleveland’s record to 10-12 with an 8-1 mark in the region.

Cleveland High head volleyball coach Jenny McCullough couldn’t be any prouder of her team.

“It’s a blessing to win any championship,” McCullough said. “For us to win it right off the bat in our first year makes it even more special.”

McCullough said the overall work ethic of the players has been the strength of the team.

“We haven’t had one player miss an afterschool practice,” McCullough said. “That’s the key. They have a fantastic attitude, and they work hard.”

The players on Cleveland’s team are Sydney Watridge, Samantha Collins, Elizabeth Kulick, Braxton Clark, Marybeth Summers, Shatara Hall, Devin Bastari, McKinnon Skeen, Megan Gant, Katherine Jackson, Nathalie Del Castillo, Katelyn Thompson, Molly Jackson, Sara Estridge, Lauren Ashley Collins, Ashley Braden Horton, Kasey Causey and Katie Taylor.

Assisting McCullough on the coaching staff is Johnna Harris.

Cleveland will conclude its regular season on Wednesday when the team travels to Camden to play Velma Jackson.
