The Cleveland High School Lady Wildcats and the H.W. Byers Lady Lions gave the fans at the Margaret Wade Gymnasium their money’s worth and then some here Tuesday evening.

The Lady Wildcats and the Lady Lions battled each other to a full five sets in their second round Class 1 Volleyball playoff match as both teams kept the ball in the air going back and forth over the net the whole night. In the end, the Lady Lions came out on top three sets to two.

Cleveland lost its first set 25-22. The Lady Wildcats came back and captured two difficult sets by winning the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-21. With Cleveland on the verge of winning, H.W. Byers didn’t give as the team won the fourth set 25-23 and the fifth and final set 15-7. The loss ended Cleveland’s season at 11-13, while H.W. Byers improved to 7-14 and will face Lafayette on Saturday in the third round.

“I thought we gave our very best effort,” Cleveland High head coach Jenny McCullough said. “That was the best volleyball we’ve played all year. They made more plays that we did. It was a great match for the community to watch. I was pleased with how the girls improved through out the year.”

Katelyn Thompson, Lauren Ashley Collins, Kasey Causey and McKinnon Skeen did a good job up on the net, while Samantha Collins had a good game on the back row. Devin Bastari did a good job of serving the Lady Wildcats.
