The Bolivar County Fire Academy for Kids will have two meetings leading up to its annual ball and 10th year celebration.

The first meeting will be Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Shaw Fire Department on 211 Gilbert Street. Pizza will be served.

The second will be held on Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. at the Shaw Fire Department with pizza served.

The meetings are open to old and new members as well as anyone interested in the academy.

The Fire Academy Kids Ball will take place Aug. 1 at the expo center.

According to Bernice Carson Boone, coordinator of the academy, the point is to teach preventative measures for any disasters.

"The kids learn how to handle a fire, what firefighters do everyday, to have three exits from your home in case of a fire, and other preventative measures," said Boone.

Boone also hosts a fire academy camp during the summer for kids from ages five to 13.

The camp lasts five days and the children learn all about fire prevention as well as do a final poster project on what they learned.

Boone also plans a trip for the participants and is planning a trip to Disney World sometime next year.

For those who once played a role or wish to become a part of the academy Boone asks they attend the meeting.
