Calvary Episcopal Church will have its annual Blessing of the Animals on at 5 p.m. Sunday on the church grounds. The event will take place on the west side of the church at the corner of Victoria Avenue and Court Street. The Very Reverend Dr. Julia Moore, interim rector, (shown here with her dog Buddy) will officiate at this year's service. This Blessing of the Animals custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi, who was the patron saint of animals and the environment. His feast day is Oct. 4 when many commemorate his memory and his life with special festivals where pets (animals and birds) are blessed. Be sure to have cats in carriers and dogs on leashes. Other pets need to be handled appropriately.
