Bayou Academy’s Michael Portner, Caleb Pilgrim and Hunter Kovac and North Sunflower Academy’s Kyle Blackwell have been chosen to represent the North in the All-Star game which will be played at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson on Friday at 5 p.m. Admission to the game is $8.
During the regular season, Portner, Pilgrim and Kovac were instrumental in Bayou finishing the year at 16-4 with a trip to the North A State Title series.
Portner had a great season pitching for the Colts as he went 9-1 with a 0.84 ERA. He also struck out 66 batters and walked 29. At the plate, Portner, who also played first base, had a good season as well by hitting .388 with two home runs, 24 RBIs and 23 runs.
Pilgrim, who played shortstop for Bayou, ended up having a monster season at the plate by hitting .446 with a home run, 29 RBIs and 18 runs scored, and Kovac, who played in the outfield, did a good job at the plate as well by hitting .340 with 20 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.
“All three of them worked hard and had the production we thought they would,” Bayou head baseball coach Will Reed said. “I’m looking forward to going down there and watching them play.”
Blackwell, who pitched and played shortstop for North Sunflower this season, had a great year at the plate by hitting .500.
“I’ve coached him in some fashion since he was in seventh grade,” NSA head baseball coach Michael Ward said. “He was one of our best leaders this year, and he’s just an overall good guy. He had a good work ethic and that’s what made him swing the bat better this year.”
Blackwell has gotten interest from junior colleges in the state, but he hasn’t made any decisions as of yet.
